Free PC tweaks you can try today
Start with simple, built-in Windows settings. Make one change at a time, keep anything you rely on enabled, and judge the result on your own PC.
Three simple starting points
These use settings already included with Windows. No downloads, registry edits, or overclocking are required.
Review startup apps
Choose which apps open automatically when you sign in. This may reduce startup activity; keep apps you need running.
- Open Settings → Apps → Startup, or open Task Manager and choose Startup apps.
- Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need at sign-in.
Review temporary files
Windows can show temporary files that may be removed to free storage. Review the categories before confirming cleanup.
- Open Settings → System → Storage → Temporary files.
- Select only categories you are comfortable removing, then confirm.
Check Game Mode
Windows includes Game Mode settings for gaming. Its availability and effect can vary by device and game.
- Open Settings → Gaming → Game Mode.
- Check the setting and test your game with the same setup before and after.
Performance results depend on your hardware, Windows setup, running apps, and game settings. If you are unsure what a setting changes, leave it at its current value.
